Who doesn't love a good book and an opportunity to discuss and explore ideas?

The purpose of this health book club is to help you build a sense of competence and empowerment when it comes to your health.

Not only will you be building a health foundation,  you will also have a guide (me) to help you explore the concepts and the practical applications of the information. At times, our book club meeting will include a guest panelist or the author of our book choice. By participating, you will also be part of a community of like-minded people. We can support and learn from one another. How great is that?

If you love to learn and are interested in both the science and the spirit of nourishment, then you just have to participate.

It's free. It's virtual, so you can participate in your jammies.

For right now, we are shooting for one book every two months.

DRUM ROLL, PLEASE!

Our fifth book club selection is Embody: Learning to Love Your Unique Body (and quiet that critical voice!) by Connie Sobczak.

I recently met Connie at a conference for clinicians treating people with eating disorders. It was then I learned about Connie and her non-profit organization, The Body Positive, which Connie co-founded with Elizabeth Scott, LCSW. Its mission: to teach people how to reconnect to their innate body wisdom so they can have more balanced, joyful self-care, and a relationship with their whole selves that is guided by love, forgiveness, and humor.

Embody is the antidote to the diet-centered, body-shaming society  we live and breathe. It was written  to "offer people the opportunity to put down the burdens of judgment, comparison, and shame in order to cultivate a relationship with themselves that is built on a foundation of self-love and trust."

Diet culture is so pervasive that most of us are not even aware of the way that it disconnects, disempowers  and disembodies us. It drives our judgment of ourselves and each other. It's imbedded in our medical practices, our parenting and our education.  It's poisonous.

Coming home to our bodies is a radical act. We can learn how to come home to ourselves by practicing The Body Positive's five core Competencies. We will learn about those as we read Embody.

I cannot recommend your participation more highly.

Connie Sobczak is the author of Embody: Learning to Love Your Unique Body (and quiet that critical voice!), her book in which she skillfully and lovingly reconnects readers to their bodies, life force, and beauty. Connie’s experience with an eating disorder in her teen years and the death of her sister Stephanie inspired her life’s work to create a world where all people are free to love their bodies. In 1996, she and Elizabeth Scott, LCSW, co-founded The Body Positive, a nonprofit organization that teaches people to value their unique identities and become liberated from self-hatred so they can optimize their energy and intellect to make positive changes in their own lives, communities, and beyond.

She has been featured in USA Today, Media Planet, Rebellious Magazine for Women, the Lady Brain Show, the Bay Area’s local Fox news, and more. In 2015, Connie and Elizabeth were chosen by La Repubblica, Italy’s leading newspaper, to be on their top 10 list of badass women for their role in founding The Body Positive movement. Connie’s passion is watching the light that emerges when people recognize and embrace their magnificent, authentic selves.
